douglass and brownI combined interviews and research into the lives of Frederick Douglass and John Brown with memories of summers on the Eastern Shore and numerous trips to see American monuments along the East Coast to created a multilayered narrative that explores how their memory has been has been preserved within the American landscape. As I photographed various locations in throughout Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia I was struck by how Douglass and Brown’s lives have been either commemorated or erased over time.
